Niklas fleischer

Boston, Massachusetts

Four days later…

It was the hardest fucking thing I’ve ever forced myself to do, leave Izzy standing there in the dark. What was I supposed to do, fuck her in the backseat of her car? Take her to a hotel—or worse, the shitty room above the bar down the street? She’s better than all that! Jesus, she’s the only woman in the world I could love for the rest of my life, be faithful to, and never fuck her once if she didn’t want it.

Wow…I guess that’s when you know true love has finally dug its claws into you. Because real love has nothing to do with sex—sex is just a bonus.

Damn. Why’d it have to be my brother’s woman?

I pace my hotel room while waiting for the Uber. When the guy gets close, I close the app on my phone, grab my duffle bag and head out. My plane leaves for Australia in two hours, and I feel anxious about making it in time for the first time in my life. I can’t miss this plane; it’s my ticket out of this love triangle nightmare.

But he tried to push us together!

When the elevator stops, I walk through the lobby just as the Uber pulls underneath the awning.

“Niklas?” he asks to confirm I’m his rider.

I nod and hop in the car.

A sign hangs from the back of the seat in front of me, but I don’t see the words in that bold font staring back at me; I’m too lost in thought to notice details. The guy tries to make conversation, and when I don’t respond quickly enough, he takes it as a sign that I’m not the conversation type and sticks to driving in silence.

We get stuck in traffic, and even though it’s just a few minutes, I feel anxious again about missing my plane.

“What time does your flight leave?” the driver asks.

“About two hours,” I say.

He nods in the rearview mirror. “OK, then you’ve got plenty of time.”

Plenty of time…

What does that even mean? And why am I thinking about it all of a sudden, time?

I shake it off.

With honking horns, squealing city bus brakes, and the occasional shouting in the background, pictures of Izzy’s face materialize in the foreground, like an end-of-life reel playing on a screen in front of me.

“Control your girl, brother,” I growled at Victor. I turned my head slowly to look at Izabel. “I know you’re pissed right now, Izzy, but don’t take it out on me.”

“Stop calling me that!” she snapped.
